Protective Enclosure

The scope of delivery of the NerdCam3D does not include a protective enclosure. This decision gives you the utmost level of freedom for the integration of the camera into your specific vehicle. However, you should take care for a safe and rigid attachment and a suitable protection against adverse mechanical, or electrostatic, or environmental conditions. In this section you will find information and suggestions on how to protect your NerdCam3D properly.

The Quest for Transparency

Transparency is our goal - introducing the new transparent housing for the NerdCam3D made of laser-cut acrylic glass (PMMA). This case now is included with every new camera.

The housing consists of three parts: a front plate, a back plate and a center frame - connected to each other by 4 stainless-steel M2.5 screws with lock-nuts and washers (all included in the set). The camera PCB resides between center frame and back plate. You may re-enforce the mechanical stability of the housing by gluing the front plate to the center frame.

Commercial Camera Housing made by eyefly

eyefly offers a well-engineered camera housing solution. With a sturdy and durable construction made of glass-fibre-plates you can easily attach the NerdCam3D to a selection of frames made by eyefly and others as well. Currently supported frames are:

  • Quadrixette 30 und 40
  • Goliath
  • Hammerhead Nano

3D-printable Camera Enclosure

In order to facilitate the creation of a suitable basic enclosure we are pleased to provide you with a set of STL/STEP files that can be used for 3D-printing using ABS or PLA filaments. All files are released to the public under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License. Please feel free to modify the enclosure at your wish. The following gallery exhibits some examples of how your enclosure may look like. Both parts of the enclosure with the camera's PCB in the middle are connected using four M2.5x12 screws and M2.5 nuts.

Remarks on 3D-Printing using different Materials

Our experience has shown that printing with ABS filament requires the original STL data to be slightly scaled in size for compensation of the shrinking of the ABS material. We usually apply the following scale factors:

  • x-direction: 1.01
  • y-direction: 1.01
  • z-direction: 1.005

These figures were determined by experimentation and may be subject to your specific 3D-printer or 3D-printing process. PLA filament may be unaffected from shrinking and should not need any scaling.

Please note, that all provided STL/STEP data is not yet scaled. We recommend to print these enclosures with 0.15mm slice/layer thickness and without additional shells.
